Drake Group Announces Support for Congressional Bill to Establish a Presidential Commission

In March of 2015, The Drake Group has released a position statement in support of a bipartisan-sponsored bill being considered by the 114th Congress (H.R. 275) that would establish a Presidential Commission “to identify and examine issues of national concern related to the conduct of intercollegiate athletics and to make recommendations for the resolution of such issues.” HR 275 was replaced by HR 2731 which added requirements for baseline concussion testing in collision sports, mandated four-year scholarships that cannot be terminated based on athletic skill or athletic injury – a key distinction between pay for play compensation and the classification of athletes as employees and financial grants-in-aid anchored in the promise of a college education, and due process protections for student-athletes and institutions facing infractions allegations, an area in which the NCAA has frequently failed its members

Drake Group President Gerald Gurney stated, “We applaud this first step of Congress to address the critical issues confronting intercollegiate athletics. We urge individuals to write to their U.S. representatives to ask them to co-sponsor the Bill.”
