The Drake Group is clearly the most aggressive faculty-based athletic reform group in the country.
It lobbies for federal and state legislation to defend academic integrity and college athlete’s rights. Consistent with its advocacy stance, the Drake Group has applied for and just received 501 (C) 4 Status from the IRS. The Drake Group’s pro bono attorney, an expert of not-for-profit organizations, points out that 501 (C) 4’s are action-oriented organizations rather than charities, and because of this, donors can not get tax write-offs for membership dues, which our case are only $35. On the other hand, any money the Drake Group gets from donors and spends for its not-for-profit goals is tax free.
If we have 1000 members, the $35,000 is non taxable. Mary Willingham, The Drake Group’s new Treasurer, says this is a reasonable goal!
